Profile:

Hi, I’m Jennifer Fisher or Jen. Doulaing for me began eight years ago after having taught evidence-based childbirth education at two major hospital systems in Portland, Oregon for over two decades. It has been a privilege to work with over a thousand  families of many different background. This opportunity has given me the ability to see a spectrum of what a "good birth" means to the individual person.

As a doula, I have seen every aspect of birth. Pairing doula care with the educational requirements expected of me, I can support the birthing person or family while recognizing the medical aspects and limitations of modern birth. With labels like AMA, high risk, IVF, multiples, multiparas, or surrogacy, birth can feel overwhelming and your agency may feel limited. Having a doula who feels comfortable moving within these margins and interfacing with medical providers creates the peace parents crave. My experience also includes supporting parents at home or in a birth center with licenced home birthing midwives as they keep a watchful presence during your birth.  My own third birth was at home welcoming an almost ten pound baby.

Parents having their needs met - unconditionally and respectfully - this is good birth. Families being supported for their choices during their journey - this is good birth. As a doula and an educator, let's clarify and explore what makes birth "good" for you.  Waterbirth, homebirth, inductions, epidurals, or a planned cesarean, birth is where we transition to parenthood and become fierce for our babies.  Babies come in a myriad of ways, we can watch birth unfold together using patience, attentiveness, my Spinning Babies training and humor.

Through my experience in this field, I have become acutely aware of unexpected outcomes. Supporting each birth as it unfolds is what a doula does and being prepared to support each family in any event is essential to me. Hence, I furthered my education as a bereavement doula and as a hospice volunteer. Every birth deserves compassionate care, regardless of the outcome.

For me, home, life and work always seem to blend. I love cheering on my kids who run, wrestle (#womenwrestle), play football and are building their careers. My mom lives on my three acres with me, so we are often gardening, planning gardens or drinking coffee in the garden.  I sneak away to hike once a month, I love the adrenaline and the views!
