"Often I get the question “what made you want to become a Doula? Is it because our Mom is one?” The truth is I have always had a heart for new parents, it is what led me to be a nanny for the past 10 years. During my time as a nanny I started working on the side with friends and friends of friends, specifically during those first few months of new baby at home. I have seen the isolation a family can face, the million non-medical questions they feel their pediatrician doesn’t have time to discuss (or they feel silly asking), and the need that families often have, especially during the first year for emotional and physical support. I see Mom’s needing someone to encourage them, offer them reassurance and confidence that they are doing things perfectly for their family. I have seen Dad’s needing tasks and encouragement on how to support his wife and new baby. Tips on practical 101 of diaper changing and bottle feeding. So I decided to get more training so I can walk through the journey with parents – supporting them through labor and into the first year of baby’s life. To empower and encourage a family in what works best for their nuclear unit. To become “a person trained to provide advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth*” aka a Doula. When I am not working as a nanny or with clients, you can find me reading a good book, out on a walking trail with my pup, or introducing my west coast husband to Buffalo staples as he gets acclimated to our city of good neighbors. Or you know hanging out with my awesome Mom, mentor, and friend.
