Why Certify as a CLE®?

Certified Lactation Educators™ (CLE®s) provide evidence based information to the community, families and professionals to encourage an increase in breastfeeding initiation, duration and support. Lactation Educators™ are found teaching community and hospital based breastfeeding classes, as peer breastfeeding counselors in hospital and public health settings, facilitating support groups, running pump rental stations and providing phone support.

The CAPPA CLE® does not prescribe, treat, nor diagnose breastfeeding related conditions and is trained to refer clients facing circumstances that require this degree of intervention to a qualified professional, such as an IBCLC. The CAPPA 20 Hour Lactation Educator™ course is not an IBCLC exam prep course, nor does the CAPPA CLE® training prepare a student to become an IBCLC.

Faculty:
Attie Sandink RN, IBCLC, has over 45 years of experience in the childbirth and breastfeeding field. Her passion began 50 years ago after the birth of her first son and realizing the lack of research breastfeeding support. She has taught birthing classes for that length of time, even before her first child was born. Her four boys have all been breastfed.
This prompted her to become an IBCLC in the early years in which the profession began. Attie enthusiastically became part of the ground floor of many Breastfeeding organizations locally, provincially and federally and was invited to further committee work. This encouraged her to make a trip with a large International group to observe the work done by DR Nils Bergman and the LLL in South Africa during the peak of the HIV Pandemic . The Baby Friendly Initiative and the teaching of the 20 hour courses with other organization helped her decide to join CAPPA Faculty many years ago. This experience also developed the desire to offer a Mentoring Program in her clinic while seeing many Breastfeeding as well as other pre and post birth clients.

Many years in the field has now prompted Attie to bring on some younger experts. She is now very excited to introduce Lori Cowx, also a Registered Nurse with many years of experience working and teaching. It was a joy to mentor Lori in her quest to become an IBCLC and she will now be monitored and mentored during this workshop and afterwards to help her to become a part of the CAPPA Faculty. She is already a member of CAPPA and is a Certified Childbirth and Lactation Educator.
