I got pregnant with my first son on my honeymoon (SURPRISE!), and found out that I was pregnant 3 days before we were supposed to leave for a year of missions work in New Zealand, and the pacific islands. Fast forward 9 months, and I had a 10 lb. breech baby boy. Thanks to my childbirth instructor, she led me to resources to help me flip my big boy. She told me the benefits of having a doula, but I didn’t think I needed one since I had such an involved and supportive husband. Once labor started, it proceeded very quickly until it was time to push. While being monitored by my midwife and an OBGYN, I pushed for 6 hours. My sons 15 in. (!) head was stuck on my pubic bone. My same childbirth instructor had sent a doula-in-training to the birth center to assist me, and she became our saving grace during such a difficult labor. Breastfeeding also was a challenge. A month after my son was born, breastfeeding was still nearly impossible. I had cracked and bleeding nipples, staph infection, and was just downright miserable. My doula was an invaluable resource as we tried to diagnose the problem. Two kids later, I’m still not able to nurse without pain, but I can pump. My doulas have been our biggest support system, along with my midwife. I’m working toward becoming a labor and postpartum doula, as well as an IBCLC, because of much they ministered to me during my transition into motherhood. I hope to offer my service for free to teen and single mothers. Harvest Evangelical Free Church
