Hi, I’m Caitlin, and my passion for all things birth started long, long ago at the ripe age of nine.
I witnessed birth up close and personal for the first time as my mom labored & gave birth naturally to my 9lb 8oz baby sister. That single event had a profound impact on my young, impressionable third grade brain. It set the stage not only for my vocation and calling but also on my view of birth as a normal, natural event.
After that experience, I became an information junkie on all things birth. I was browsing the pregnancy & birth section in Barnes & Noble and reading Ina May years before children of my own were ever on the radar. My husband claims that I at least waited until the second date to bring up childbirth.
When it came time to start a family of our own, I knew I wanted an out-of-hospital birth with a midwife. The only trouble was, I seriously doubted my ability to give birth without pain medication. I understood that my body was designed to give birth and that birth was a normal physiological process, but I didn’t know if I would be able to handle the pain without an epidural. Bottom line, I was afraid.
But then something amazing happened. At 6 months pregnant I walked into a local childbirth education class thinking, “I really hope I can do this,” and walked a few hours later saying, “I KNOW I can do this.”
That is the power of a quality childbirth education class.
I was able to give birth at home naturally not once, but twice. And I know I couldn’t have done it without the information and practices I learned as a part of my childbirth education classes.
Now as a certified childbirth educator and labor doula, I get to help other women find that same confidence in their bodies and their abilities. I give moms the support, information, encouragement, and tools they need to have the BEST birth day ever.
But it doesn’t end in the delivery room. Birth is powerful! I want women leaving their births feeling empowered and joyful. You can never know the outcome or the decisions you’ll have to face in the course of a pregnancy and birth (or in life for that matter), but with support, knowledge, and the tools to make informed decisions, women can move forward into motherhood with confidence.
I like to think of what I do as changing the world, one birth at a time.
